Types of Compensation Available To Motor Vehicle Collision Victims May 17, 2019

Following your involvement in a motor vehicle collision, you may be entitled to receive certain forms of compensation for your losses. In order to clue you in on which sources of compensation they are, we have put together a quick guide.

Compensation for property damages

Once you have obtained treatment for your physical injuries, your next concern may be your property losses. Namely, the damage which has been sustained by their motor vehicle. Car repairs can be quite costly, and a total loss will require the purchase of a whole new vehicle.

If you have invested in collision coverage, then your go to person in this situation will be your insurer. Even if you are found liable for causing the collision, you will then still be able to obtain coverage for property damage, though only in connection with your deductible. If another involved party be found liable, then you will still obtain coverage from your insurer, sometimes with a waived deductible, before that same amount is then recovered from the insurer of the liable driver. However, the latter is only possible if the liable driver is also insured. You might want to talk with your personal injury lawyer in Spruce Grove before you file a claim.

Compensation for medical expenses

Treating your accident related injuries can be a rather costly endeavor. Prescription medication, ambulance bills, physical therapy, appointments with specialists. The list goes on. Mitigating your losses will require that you follow your doctor’s every recommendation. The sustaining of a minor injury as a driver will often lead to you becoming entitled to coverage from your insurance company in the form of Accident Benefits. These benefits are sometimes also referred to as Section B benefits but, as already mentioned, are only applicable to minor injuries.

More severe injuries will require that you have purchased private medical insurance for yourself, have access to private insurance via your employer, or have access to it through an immediate family member. If none of this is the case, or if your access to this insurance does not suffice to cover all your expenses, then you will need to look for further coverage from your insurer. Let your injury lawyer step in and handle the dealings with your insurance company as they know how to help you negotiate a higher amount as compensation.

In the event that you have no access to private medical insurance, and no further access to other benefits, you may be able to look to the Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Fund for further coverage. This fund has been specifically set up to provide coverage to accident victims with insufficient sources for compensation.
